How can I stop my dog from barking?

Barking can be a big problem with some dogs; fortunately there are many options for correcting the problem. Here is an overview of some common choices that pet owners choose to pursue:

Sonic bark control

Sonic bark control devices come in a few different styles.  There are some sonic bark controls devices that you can put in your yard that looks like a bird house to devices your dog wears as a collar. They all work on the same principle; a microphone on the device detects your dog barking and emits a sound that startles your dog, disrupting it from barking.  These products are a great choice for the dog that may be too sensitive to use a more direct correction device on.

Spray bark collar

Spray bark collars are the next step up from the sonic devices for a dog that may not react to a sound. These collars use sound and vibration sensors to detect your dogs bark and correct nuisance barking with a surprising mist of spray. The collars are refillable and have choices as to the scent. Citronella, Lemon and Unscented Spray Refills are all available.  On average you can expect 30-40 sprays per refill, and 400-500 sprays per can.

Static bark collar

Static bark collars are the most effective choice for dogs that may be a little more challenging. The collar uses sound and vibration sensors to detect your dogs bark and deliver a safe but annoying static correction. All the collars have multiple levels of correction and some even adjust automatically depending on how often it must correct your dog.

Bottom line

All of these products work without the owner being present. If you want to control when your dog gets a correction you could use a remote trainer. The remote trainer gives you the option of using sonic or static correction on demand and is a great way to train if you want to use a command when correcting your dog.
